What makes the DMP-A8 different from the DMP-A6?

The DMP-A8 uses AKM's AK4499EX DAC with the AK4191EQ digital filter instead of the A6's two ESS ES9038Q2M chips, and adds XLR and RCA analog inputs and a fully balanced R-2R volume control. Both have a 6" touchscreen, and on paper their XLR outputs measure the same: over 128 dB of dynamic range and -120 dB THD+N.

Can it replace a standalone DAC?

Yes. With USB-B, coaxial, optical and HDMI ARC inputs, it can serve as the DAC for a computer, a CD transport or a TV, with a dynamic range above 128 dB on the XLR outputs.

Does it support internal storage?

Yes. An M.2 NVMe slot takes an SSD of up to 4 TB, so you can keep your music library on the device, and two USB 3.0 ports accept external drives.

How does it connect to active speakers like Dutch & Dutch?

Through its balanced XLR analog outputs, with volume set by the DMP-A8's R-2R control. It has no AES/EBU output: for a digital connection to the AES3 input of the Dutch & Dutch 8c or 8c Studio, choose the DMP-A8 Gen 2.
